In Memoriam: Richard Stites

Published: 12.3.2010

Richard Stites was a renowned and highly respected scholar of Russian history. He was a professor at Georgetown University and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki. He first visited Finland and the Slavonic Library in 1969. Since then, he returned to the Slavonic Library almost annually. His books were largely based on our collection and he helped to spread the reputation of the Slavonic Library far and wide as a treasure trove for scholars of Russian history.

At the turn of 2009-2010, Richard once again arrived in Helsinki to write his latest book, although he was debilitated by illness at the time. He wanted to come because he loved Finland and the Slavonic Library and was naturally also keen to finish his book. Sadly, that was not to be. His final period of work did not last long, as his illness finally took its toll.

The staff of the National Library of Finland remember Richard Stites with affection and wish to express their sympathy to his family.
