The Slavonic Library's Russian Maps
The Slavonic Library contains over 3,750 Russian maps, most of which date from the 1800s and early 1900s. The maps have been obtained during the period 1828-1917 as legal deposit copies, but they do not form a comprehensive legal deposit copy collection. The maps have also been obtained from the collections of Russian garrisons and schools functioning in Finland.
The maps consist of the following groups:
- General maps
- Maps showing parish boundaries and other areas falling within the sphere of ecclesiastical administration
- Maps depicting different areas
- Theme maps, such as climate, industrial and road maps
- Governmental maps
- Maps depicting the wars waged by the Russian Empire
- Maps of different continents
- Maps of different countries
- Astronomical maps
There are also maps from the Soviet Era; in the early 2000s, modern Russian maps were acquired for the collection. Russian maps can also be found in the Finnish Maps Collection and the Nordenskiöld Collection.
The majority of the Russian maps are catalogued in the Helka database. A card catalogue can be found at the Slavonic Library's information desk.
