Microfilms and Microfiches

The preservation and availability of the information contained in the National Collection's publications is safeguarded through microfilming. This facilitates the protection of the originals from the wear resulting from use. Old literature from the 1500s to 1944 and domestic newspapers from the 1700s to the present day have been microfilmed.

The publications are photographed on silver film, either on 105-mm microfiches or 35-mm roll film. The silver film complies with international standards; its expected life expectancy is at least 500 years. Microfilming is carried out at the Microfilming and Conservation Centre in Mikkeli.

Microfilms of copyrighted publications are furnished as copies. The copies can be either positive (black text on a light background) or negative (light text on a dark background).
