Statistical Principles

The annual Finnish publisher statistics are compiled from the National Bibliography's database Fennica. The cataloguing and statistics are based on international recommendations (Universal Bibliographic Control) and definitions (ISO 0707).

Books

The book statistics contain commercially distributed books in addition to studies, reports and other publications published by government and local authorities, societies and associations, educational establishments etc., which are registered in the Fennica database. There are no page limitations, although all publications under 48 pages are placed in a separate group in the UNESCO statistics.

All revised editions are counted in the statistics, but not new unrevised editions.

Occasional publications, such as advertising materials, brochures, pricelists and programmes, are not registered in Fennica and are consequently not counted in the statistics - this also applies to the books statistics.

Periodicals

Publications which appear at stated or regular intervals and contain general or special articles are counted as periodicals in the statistics. Publications in newspaper format which do not fill the criteria of a newspaper, e.g., content and frequency, such as trade journals in newspaper format that are issued irregularly are also counted as periodicals. The statistics also contain organisational publications that do not have a wide circulation.

Newspapers

The newspaper statistics contain publications issued periodically one to seven times a week containing main or regional news. Whether they have a wide circulation or not and whether they are for commercial sale or not is of no importance.
