- Multimedia, when they are part of the printed music publication (e.g., a recorded tape of one of the composition's parts)
- Song texts or lyrics, when published with the music, but that are also available separately
- Commentaries, when published with the music, but that are also available separately
- Songbooks, when published with the music
- Braille music publications
- Microform publications
- Electronic publications
Items not be given an ISMN:
- Books on music, with only exemplary music
- Stand-alone sound or video recordings and digitised sound and image recordings
- Music periodicals and serials (excluding printed music publications published in serials)
