The ISBN and the EAN Barcode

EAN (European Article Number)

The EAN (European Article Number) for books and monographic publications is based on the ISBN. The EAN always starts with the "bookland" prefix 978. It is followed by nine digits and a check digit calculated according to the EAN rules. The ISBN must also be printed in the publication in type large enough to be easily legible.

The Finnish ISBN Agency distributes only ISBN numbers, so the publisher is responsible for obtaining the EAN barcode.
