ISBN (International Standard Book Number)

The ISBN is used for the acquisition of publications, stock lists, invoicing, bookshop order systems, international and national union catalogues, bibliographies and library circulation systems. The ISBN makes it easier to identify and handle publications.

An ISBN is given to all books and book-like items. Therefore the physical format in which an item is presented or distributed does not matter. The physical format can be a printed book or an audiovisual or electronic recording. An individual ISBN is given to each book or other monographic publication and to all its formats as well as revised editions.
