Sound, Image and Electronic recordings

Sound and image recordings are defined as all sound recordings, talking books and magazines, slides, microfiche and combinations of sound and image recording and printed publication.

Legal deposit copies must be submitted of

  • All sound, image and CD-ROM recordings produced in Finland
  • All sound, image and CD-ROM recordings produced abroad but intended for distribution in Finland

Multimedia

Multimedia is comprised of two or more media types which combine to form a whole that may be considered a publication. These include teaching material packages which may include a book, sound recordings and picture material. Legal deposit copies of multimedia publications must be submitted as they are distributed.

Statutory deposits

Legal deposit copies must be submitted free of charge by

  • The technical manufacturer of the product, such as a record press, cassette producer, picture laboratory or other applicable business
  • The publisher or importer, if the material is manufactured abroad, but intended for primary distribution in Finland

The publisher is also required to submit the legal deposit copies in the case of a multimedia publication that is comprised of material manufactured by several different companies.

When a manufacturer of a sound, image or CD-ROM recording only produces part of a multimedia publication, it must make sure that this part is included in the legal deposit copy that is submitted for archiving.

Appearance of the legal deposit copies

The legal deposit copies must be submitted as complete sound recordings with labels and slide sets with the appropriate cases and texts. If the sound recording is published without a label, cassette slip etc., a note of who commissioned the recording must be included, as well as information on the performers, song titles etc.

Number of copies

  • 1 copy must be submitted of each sound, image and electronic recording
  • 1 copy must be submitted of each multimedia publication
