Digitisation activities

The core task of the National Library’s Centre for Preservation and Digitisation is the high-quality digitisation of the National Library’s cultural heritage materials. The focus is on the National Collection and the other special collections of the National Library. Newspapers and periodicals, books, ephemera and sound recordings are all included among the material being digitised. Material is digitised to improve its preservation and availability.

Metadata both on the original work and on the digital object are attached to the material during the digitisation process. Attaching the metadata improves the usability of digitised materials. Thanks to post-processing, full text searches can be conducted within digitised material. In addition, digitised material is structured to improve text search results and to broaden the scope of the search functions, for example.

Providing and further developing the necessary conditions for long-term preservation is an integral part of the digitising operations of the National Library. In this way, the National Library hopes to ensure the preservation and accessibility of digitised materials in the future, regardless of changes in hardware, software or file formats.

The Centre strives to remain at the top of digital development and to ensure that its operations are at an internationally high level. In addition to digitising National Library material, the Centre for Preservation and Digitisation also offers digitisation services for external customers.
