Free access to the LINDA and ARTO union catalogues

Published: 18.1.2010

The LINDA union catalogue of Finnish university libraries and the ARTO reference database of Finnish articles are now freely accessible to everyone.

As of the beginning of 2010, searching these databases has been possible from all computers connected to the Internet.

Previously, these databases could be freely accessed only from universities and public libraries, and all other use required purchasing
a separate user licence.

Thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of Education for 2010, the National Library is able to offer free access to the Linda and Arto union catalogues. During the current year, the National Library will negotiate with the Ministry over permanent funding for free access.

Linda is a joint catalogue of Finnish university libraries, which contains the Finnish National Bibliography as well as references to the books, journals, publication series, maps, visual materials, archives and electronic materials in the databases of university libraries, the Library of Parliament, the National Repository Library and the Library of Statistics.

Arto contains reference information on Finnish scholarly articles, mostly from the early 1990s to the present, but abundantly on older articles as well. Articles from some 600 regularly published journals are registered in Arto.
