Virtual bookshelf

E-books stimulate curiosity and expectations but are still for the most part low level e-publications. To honor the 20th anniversary of its Centre for Preservation and Digitisation, the National Library of Finland tried how an electronic bookshelf might look in September 2010.

The results of the test, a small virtual bookshelf and parchment presentation, are now on the Internet freely accessible to anyone. The presentation material comes from the National Library of Finland’s collections and the digitisation centre’s own work.

The bookshelf’s selection offers a brief glimpse of the history of Finnish literature; side by side are, among other works, Mikael Agricola’s ABCkiria, Sakari Topelius’s landscape work, Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers and Edith Södergran’s poems.

The works are also included in the National Library of Finland’s
Save a Book campaign, giving the Library an opportunity to thank its supporters.
