Reading Rooms - Reading Places

Persons using the Library's collections have the primary right to use the reading rooms and the other working facilities in the Library. The Library's facilities for researchers can be reserved for specified time periods by designated researchers carrying out their work.

General Reading Room

The General Room, located in the Main Building's South Hall, contains used reference literature, dictionaries, catalogues, parliamentary documents and similar materials.

The Reading Room has 52 reading places, 24 of which are reserved for researchers. Also in the front part of the hall are two tables seating 10 persons. The use of laptop computers is possible only in the front section of the hall where there are free sockets.

Newspaper Reading Room

The Newspaper Reading Room, located in the Main Building's North Hall, contains the National Collection's microfilms and microfiches, the reference collection's domestic periodicals, series published by scientific associations as well as microfilms of a few foreign magazines.

Devices for viewing microfilms and microfiches, as well as copiers for self-service copying, are located in the hall. It is advisable to reserve a time to use a copier in advance.

Newspaper orders are left with the Newspaper Reading Room's attendant on duty. Microfilms are furnished for use by the Newspaper Reading Room's customers for a period of one week; unfilmed periodicals are delivered to the Fabiania building's Fennica Reading Room. The loan period can be extended if requested.

Rotunda's reading places and workstations

In connection with the open collection, the Rotunda's floors contain a total of 56 reading places and 8 workstations on the 1st and 2nd floors. On the Rotunda's 3rd and 5th floors, the first two and the last two reading places are equipped for online HUPnet use.

Special Reading Room

The Special Reading Room, located on the 2nd floor of the Fabiania building in the wing on the Kirkkokatu side, is entered through the main entrance at Unioninkatu 36. The hall has 14 reading places and three map tables, as well as six places for the study of maps and other large-sized materials.

The Special Reading Room's reference library supports the study of vintage literature and cartography.

Owing to the rarity and uniqueness of the materials, a special set of rules other than those formulated for the other reading rooms are observed in the Special Reading Room's supervised facilities. Separate instructions are also provided regarding the handling of materials in the special reading rooms.

The Terra Incognita CD-ROM and historical maps from the A. E. Nordenskiöld Map Collection can be accessed with the hall's workstations. The hall has four reading tables equipped for online HUPnet use.

Fennica Reading Room

Located on the 2nd floor of the Fabiania building, the Fennica Reading Room is reached through the main entrance at Unioninkatu 36. The hall has 24 reading places equipped with sockets, facilitating the use of laptop computers. The hall also has four reading room places reserved for researchers. Places with HUPnet online access are identified with a yellow label. The label and network socket are found under the hatch.

From the research standpoint the hall's reference library contains important domestic bibliographies, reference works as well as a selection of dictionaries. A microfiche collection of old microfilmed domestic literature can be examined in the Newspaper Reading Room.

The Fennica Reading Room has 28 researcher shelves, with approximately one meter of shelf reserved for the materials ordered by each researcher.

Materials ordered as reading room loans are delivered to the attendant on duty in the Fabiania building; Fennica materials subject to license are brought to supervised facilities, and the Humanities Collection's reading room loans are placed on open shelves.

Electronic Materials Reading Room

Facilities for examining electronic legal deposit copies will be situated in the Electronic Materials Reading Room located on the 2nd floor of the Fabiania building in the near future.

The hall has eight workstations, two Helka database kiosks, as well as shelves for reading room loans.

American Resource Center

The American Resource Center's reading room has 14 reading places equipped with sockets and three workstations.

The ARC receives 100 magazines and newspapers, including daily editions of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

The Slavonic Library has a 12-seat reading room, two separate reading places as well as four reading places reserved for researchers. Besides these, the Library has workspaces for four researchers.
