Searching for Cyrillic items in Helka catalogue
Cyrillic publications are entered into Helka in Cyrillic characters. Pre-revolutionary orthography and old grammatical forms have been preserved, e.g. Новыя путевыя впетчатлѣнія / К. Скальковскій .
When searching the database for Cyrillic items, you have two options:
1. In Cyrillic searches Windows's Cyrillic Modern Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian and Serbian character sets can be used. For works published with the old orthography, transliterated searches are the most reliable.
To bring up the on screen keyboard of Cyrillic characters in Windows XP, follow these steps:
1. Click on start at the bottom left corner.
2. Choose run and type OSK
3. a graphical representation of a keyboard is loaded as a separate window.
To type with the virtual keyboard, click the corresponding key with your mouse. To get Cyrillic characters, move the cursor on Cyrillic text and switch your language bar into eg. RU. The letters of on screen keyboard will switch into Cyrillic characters.
2. Search in transliteration: when you carry out a search by entering a keyword in transliteration, please, use ISO 9 Standard for transliteration. In Helka, Cyrillic characters are transliterated automatically according to ISO 9. Diacritics including soft signs can be ignored.
