The Picture Collection
The National Collection's Picture Collection contains approximately 2,000 works. Besides individual pictures the materials include picture portfolios, albums and small picture books. Most of the collection consists of picture printings obtained as legal deposit copies, but there are also pictures obtained as donations at various times, including a considerable amount of foreign materials.
Although most of the pictures have been printed, the collection includes small-scale sets of original graphics, drawings, watercolours, and photographic proof sheets. The oldest pictures date from the late 1600s and early 1700s; the chronological focus is the 1800s and early 1900s. Quantitatively, most of the pictures are fashion and landscape images, art reproductions, and teaching panels.
