The National Collection: Periodicals

Finnish periodicals

Periodicals make up one of the largest groups of materials in the National Collection. Since the late 18th century, tens of thousands of periodicals have been published, which on the basis of their content can be divided into idealogical pamphlets, pictorials, magazines, general cultural periodicals and membership bulletins of various organisations and associations.

The magazines in the National Collection can be consulted only for research purposes. To order such a magazine, an application form must be completed. The oldest magazines have been preserved on microfilm, which can be found among the reference films in the Newspaper Reading Room. A selection of Finnish scholarly and cultural periodicals are available in the reference library on the second floor of the Newspaper Reading Room and in the Music Library. Finnish online magazines, periodicals and newspapers can be found in the Suoma database.

The National library has digitized some older magazines.
Periodicals until 1910 are in freely accessible use: //digi.nationallibrary.fi.

Magazines from 1911 onwards are accessible only at certain locations, using dedicated workstations.
