Renewed ISSN Standard

The ISO standard (ISO 3297:2009) defines the use of the ISSN for the identification of continuing resources. The international standard was renewed in 2009. The renewed ISSN standard introduces a new ISSN-based standard number, the ISSN-L (linking ISSN).

Some requirements according to the ISSN standard:

Copies or surrogates of the resources are required for an ISSN assignment.

No copyright shall subsist in the assignment of an ISSN or in its use in association with, or in place of, the resources they represent.

An ISSN assignment requires the following metadata:
- Title
- Country of publication
- Medium of publication
- Language of publication
- Publisher's name and location
- Date(s) of publication
- Publication status (e.g. currently published, discontinued, unknown)
- Frequency

The following elements should be supplied if applicable and available:
- Electronic location and access (i.e. URL for online resources)
- Additional physical form title or ISSN
- Preceding title or ISSN
- Succeeding title or ISSN
- Supplement parent title or ISSN
- Supplement title or ISSN
- Main series title or ISSN
- Subseries title or ISSN
- Nonspecific relationship title or ISSN
