Requesting an ISMN

The ISMN is similar to the ISBN. The ISMN also has a publisher prefix that varies depending on the publisher's title output. Because the country code is replaced by the constant letter M, the publisher identifier can be longer than in the ISBM.

Publishers that have six digits or less in their prefix will receive their own ISMN listings and are themselves responsible for the numbering. Publishers with seven digits and occasional publishers receive individual numbers from the Finnish ISBN Agency.
