Structure of the ISBN
The structure of the 13-digit ISBN (1.1.2007-)
The ISBN consists of the letters ISBN and 13 digits divided into five elements. The elements must be separated clearly by hyphens:
ISBN 978-951-98548-9-2
Registration group element
Registrant element
Publication element
Check digit
The prefix element 978 is made available by EAN International.
The registration group element 951 or 952 identifies that the book or some other monograph is published in Finland. For example, the language group codes 0 and 1 are codes of the English language group, and they are used by Great Britain, the US and English-speaking Canada among others (for example, ISBN 978-0-521-53989-0 and ISBN 978-1-84064-454-8).
Registrant element: The length of this element varies in direct relationship to the anticipated output of the publisher.
The publication element identifies a certain publication produced by a certain publisher.
The check digit is calculated using a modulus 10 algorithm. The new ISBN check digit can no longer be an X.
The structure of the 10-digit ISBN (-2006)
The ISBN consists of the letters ISBN and 10 digits divided into four parts - first the country or language group code, then the publisher identifier, title identifier and the check digit.
Example: ISBN 951-1-12345-8

The country code 951 or 952 indicates that the book or some other monograph is published in Finland. The language group codes 0 and 1 are codes of the English-language group, and they are used by, for example, Great Britain, the US, Australia and English-speaking Canada.
The number of digits in the publisher prefix varies depending on the publisher's title output. The title code identifies a certain publication produced by a certain publisher. The check digit identifies incorrect ISBNs during the computer processing. For number ten, the letter X is used.
