On-line material

The National Library harvests and preserves materials available on the internet at different times for the public. The goal is to collect a good representation of the range of material available on-line. In addition to the annual domain harvest, several specific, thematic searches are conducted. Some on-line materials are also accepted as deposits.

Material with restricted use, on-line publications requiring fees and materials based on databases (e.g. publication banks) cannot be harvested automatically with the current tools. To ensure the long-term preservation of these materials the National Library collaborates with the publishers.

Deposited on-line materials will be available to the public on terminals reserved for this purpose in legal deposit libraries.

Submitting Digital Material

The digital materials primarily accepted in electronic form from internet publishers are:

  • books that have an ISBN number
  • publications that have an ISSN number
  • official publications
  • map publications
  • internet-only music (recordings, printed music) or music otherwise absent from the National Collection.

On-line deposits are received via email at e-vapaa(at)helsinki.fi. The message should include a link to the page where the material may be retrieved. Alternatively the publication may be sent as an email attachment.

Questions on the subject should also be directed to: e-vapaa(at)helsinki.fi.
