Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Join the National Metadata Knowledgebase
Published: 23.12.2011
The libraries of the Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences will be joining the National Finnish Metadata Knowledgebase project, formerly known as the Union Catalogue, in late 2011 and in 2012. The Ministry of Education and Culture agreed to finance the licence for the Aleph software by Ex Libris as of the end of 2011.
The Finnish National Metadata Knowledgebase provides a new working environment for metadata production, which will enhance the core processes. Sharing the metadata makes it easier to utilise work done by other libraries and minimises the need for multiple bibliographic descriptions. The National Metadata Knowledgebase is a centralised service which forms the core of library systems. The storage of bibliographic metadata is maintained by the National Library; its centralised servers and good data security bring efficiency and cost effectiveness for the whole library sector.
