Thesauri

Thesauri are tools for indexing both printed and electronic publications and for searching them. They provide those cataloguing and searching the material a common language, thus improving the chances to find relevant documents. Thesauri are used in the databases of libraries, archives and museums. Thesauri can cover either general or special terminology.

The National Library of Finland is responsible for the development and updating of four Finnish thesauri:

• YSA - Yleinen suomalainen asiasanasto - Finnish General Thesaurus
• Allärs - Allmän tesaurus på svenska - Swedish translation of the Finnish General Thesaurus
• MUSA - Musiikin asiasanasto - Finnish Music Thesaurus
• CILLA - Specialtesaurus för musik - Swedish translation of the Finnish Music Thesaurus

An on-line version called VESA includes all the above-mentioned thesauri. It is available free in the Internet.
