Digitisation services

Digital copies of original material are created either by scanning or taking a digital photograph. Orders can be submitted using a separate order form. Digital copies can be made of material in the public domain. To digitise material that is protected by copyright, the customer must obtain permission from the copyright holder prior to submitting the order.

The National Library’s Centre for Preservation and Digitisation in Mikkeli specialises in the digitisation of extensive amounts of material, paper documents of a large size (the maximum size of the original can be A1) and material in poor condition requiring delicate treatment. The Centre can also create digital copies of microfilm reels (16mm and 35mm), microfiche and sound recordings.

Post-processing services are offered for digitised material. When necessary, the material can be converted into a desired format, with added features such as Optical Character Recognition, which enables text search within a digitised document.

Copies of already digitised National Library material are also available. Digitised images can be ordered as paper copies up to size A0.

The Helsinki Digitising Studio of the National Library specialises in creating individual reprographic images for private use, as well as for printing and exhibition purposes.
