Digitisation and deployment of Swedish-language newspapers

Goal and tasks

According to the Act on Collecting and Preserving Cultural Materials and the Copyright Act, all digitised materials are available only at protected workstations in the National Library and in legal deposit libraries as well as in the Library of Parliament.
The project will open access to digitised Swedish-language newspaper materials published in Finland until 31 December 1949 to the general public through digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi by the end of 2021.
In addition, access to digitised Swedish-language newspaper materials published in Finland until 31 December 2018 will be opened for research and customer use in the Svenska Litteratursällskapet’s archives in Helsinki and Vaasa, in the Brages Pressarkiv’s and Ålands landskapsarkiv’s archives in Mariehamn as the digitisation proceeds. Research use also enables data mining.
All in all, the project will digitise and deploy approximately three to four million new pages of Swedish-language newspaper material. At the end of the project, all Swedish-language newspapers published in Finland will be in a continuous historical chain in a digital format. They have been opened for open public use until 31 December 1949 as well as until 31 December 2018 for research and customer use of the contract archives through digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi.

All in all, nearly six million pages of Swedish-language newspaper material will be digitally available at the end of the project.
