The books in the Slavonic Library are mostly related to Russia and other Slavic countries, peoples and cultures. The collection serves research of Russia, the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in humanities and social sciences.
The book collection includes deposit copies from around the Russian Empire on all topics received in 1828–1917. The collection also includes reference books, bibliographies and dictionaries from the early-1800s on.

Cataloguing principles
The description retains the character set and orthography of the publication whenever possible. Cyrillic characters may also be retrieved as transliterated according to the ISO-9 standard (see the transliteration guidelines).

Most of the books in the Slavonic Library can be found through the National Library’s search service. Some of the dictionaries, bibliographies and reference material can only be found in the card catalogue. For the Polonica collection, monographs published in serial publications and books acquired in the 1980s are similarly only available through the card catalogue.
Acquisition policy
In accordance with the collection development policy of the National Library of Finland, research literature in humanities and social sciences and source materials in Slavic and key European languages will be acquired to the collection.
