Georg August Wallin (1811–1852), a renowned Finnish explorer, arabist and professor of Oriental literature, was one of the first Europeans to study the Arabian Peninsula, its inhabitants, and dialects. Wallin's impact on Oriental studies in Finland was great but his most valuable contribution is to be found in his letters and diaries. These are kept in the National Library of Finland. In 2008 the project Georg August Wallins skrifter was initialized; its intent is to publish Wallin's entire literary output in a text-critical edition.
